About Us
|
Music Teachers of Greater Baton Rouge (MTGBR) is a community of dedicated music instructors from Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. We are committed to helping students grow into the best musicians they can be, while instilling in them a lifelong love of music. One of the main benefits of studying with an MTGBR teacher is the opportunity to participate in a variety of festivals, where students can receive detailed feedback on performances and earn certificates and trophies based on the merit of their performance.
|
MTGBR is a local chapter of NFMC. The NFMC is one of the world's largest music organizations. It has provided opportunities for musical study, performance, and appreciation to more than 200,000 members.
|
MTGBR teachers are a tightly-knit group of music professionals. Although all of us teach lessons, many of us are also performers, consistently performing solo or collaboratively on stage or in weekly church services. We encourage our students to use their music throughout their life, whether by challenging them to becoming music majors/minors, church musicians, or composing and possibly publishing their own works. We strive to make our students truly ENJOY making music.

Festivals
Our local festivals have provided students with a low-pressure format to learn how to perform since 1950, utilizing a system that increasingly challenges students musically. Some examples of festivals students can participate in include: Piano

Scholarships
MTGBR teachers will be allowed to enter their students in a wide variety of competitions to earn prestige and monetary rewards. From the NFMC website: "The National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) offers more than $750,000 in competition and award prizes on the local, state and national level. The Biennial Young Artist and Ellis Duo-Pianists competitions award a total of $92,000 in awards and two years of performance bookings. Additional competitions are sponsored by the Federation in a wide range of categories, including voice, instrumental music, composition, dance, conducting, handicapped and visually impaired, and music therapy. NFMC also sponsors more than 38 annual and biennial awards for students desiring to attend the 20 sponsored Summer Music Centers." |
By joining, you become allied with a very active (and friendly) group of teachers. We consist of teachers of different backgrounds who all bring their various knowledge and experience to our most interesting MTGBR meetings (Please see the Calendar for meeting dates)!
The LFMC offers several events for students to grow in their performance and technical skills. There is also a theory test! These events provide ample motivation for students to memorize pieces at a performance tempo and learn theoretical concepts. Students receive a certificate for each year of participation, and they receive a trophy for 3 consecutive years of Superior ratings. These certificates and trophies are paid for through our Festival fees.
The NFMC promotes American music and has thousands of dollars of scholarships available. For example, the Young Artist Award (available to young adults) is worth $10,000. Click the link here to see more information!
After the 2016 flood, MTGBR members joined with other local music clubs by donating music and instruments to help music teachers who had suffered flooding.
Our group is a welcoming group. Many of our teachers have become good friends. It is a wonderfully supportive atmosphere in which we are able to discuss various teaching dilemmas and creative ways to solve them!
